New Partnership to Make Conservation Profitable for Farming Families in Zambia
The Trafigura Foundation is partnering with COMACO (Community Markets for Conservation) to support rural communities in building sustainable livelihoods while restoring ecosystems.
In rural Zambia, poverty and environmental degradation are
closely linked, with limited market access driving unsustainable land use
practices, including poaching, that accelerate deforestation and biodiversity
loss.
COMACO addresses this challenge by helping farmers
transition to climate-resilient, chemical-free agriculture, strengthening
cooperatives, and connecting producers to premium markets through its “It’s
Wild!” brand.
To date, COMACO has supported hundreds of thousands of
households and helped restore large conservation landscapes through
agroforestry, tree planting, and alternative livelihood creation.
With support from the Trafigura Foundation, COMACO will
scale its model further by expanding conservation farming, strengthening
digital tools, and supporting livelihood transitions in high-biodiversity
regions.
