The initiative supports Instituto Juruá’s community-led conservation model, which creates economic value from the sustainable management of natural resources. At the heart of the programme is Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas), the world’s largest freshwater fish. By helping communities establish sustainable fishing agreements and access markets for their catch, the model makes conservation a source of income while helping protect biodiversity.
The partnership will also support the development of other sustainable value chains, including açaí and oilseeds, while strengthening local organisations to replicate the approach in new locations.
By 2029, the programme aims to improve income opportunities, livelihoods and food security for around 13,000 people, support the effective governance of 8 million hectares of forests, rivers and wetlands, and unlock additional conservation finance for local communities.
This new partnership aims to show that when communities benefit economically from protecting nature, conservation can deliver lasting results for both people and the Amazon.
