Mongolia: A commitment to conservation

Our partner The Nature Conservancy has announced “Eternal Mongolia“, a historic collaboration with the Government of Mongolia to meet its pioneering vision to protect 30% of its lands and waters, while providing a secure and economic future for Mongolians.

Climate change is a major cause of biodiversity loss, accelerating species decline through rising temperatures and changing natural cycles. Combined with other human activities like deforestation, it has led to a significant decrease in species, with projections suggesting that one million might disappear without intervention. Inaction would have severe economic consequences, given that more than half of global GDP relies on nature’s services.

To face these challenges, “Eternal Mongolia” is a shining example of what is possible when governments, NGOs, and funders unite for a common vision. It’s a significant step towards global 2030 Goals, supporting sustainable livelihoods and economic well-being for thousands of households.

Our Foundation was one of the key partners enabling the successful launch of this pivotal initiative which will safeguard an additional 14.4 million hectares of Mongolia’s pristine landscapes and improve management effectiveness across its entire protected areas system, benefiting local herders and wildlife alike.

“It feels so meaningful to be one of the supporters of this transformative programme; it will truly contribute to advancing nature and addressing the biodiversity crisis”, said Senior Programme Manager Nina Saalismaa during her meeting met with TNC CEO Jennifer Morris in Geneva.
