Helping marginalized youth in Spain to realise their potential
The Trafigura Foundation is partnering with Fundación Don Bosco to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to overcome marginalisation, acquire skills and confidence, and gain a foothold on the career ladder.
The challenge
Spain’s labour market suffers severe structural problems such as high youth unemployment, a predominantly low-skilled workforce and a concerning level of precarious work, especially temporary employment. The southern region of Andalucía is among the worst-affected areas.
Young people with difficult socioeconomic backgrounds and low levels of education face particularly high obstacles to enter an already fragmented job market. Without targeted mentoring and support, they risk further marginalisation.
The solution
Fundación Don Bosco is helping high-risk youth in southern Spain to discover and navigate career pathways and break the cycle of social exclusion. Its programmes target 18 to 30-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training and offers a comprehensive learning journey from guidance to career development, professional training, personal mentoring, and job placement support.
Based on a successfully concluded partnership in the cities of Seville and Huelva, the Trafigura Foundation is now working with Don Bosco to strengthen its capacity and explore opportunities in the green economy for vulnerable youth.
Partnership impact
Support from the Trafigura Foundation is enabling Don Bosco to develop a ”green job” strategy and associated training materials, build its staff’s capacity and establish partnerships with companies who can provide relevant opportunities to young people.
In 2022 alone, Don Bosco helped 4,148 people join the labour market.
