Building the blue economy in climate-threatened island states around the world
The Trafigura Foundation is supporting the provision of capital and capacity to projects building the blue economy and the social and environmental resilience of Small Island Developing States across the globe.
The challenge
Small islands steward vast areas of the world’s oceans, giving them a critical role in marine conservation and the development of the global blue economy. The islands are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts such as storms and floods, rising sea levels, and ocean acidification. Yet SIDS receive only 0.2% of global climate finance, undermining the ability of governments and communities to reduce risks, improve livelihoods, and manage marine and coastal ecosystems sustainably.
The solution
The Outrigger Impact Fund helps close the adaptation funding gap for SIDS by investing in early- and growth-stage companies that are developing nature-positive solutions to the islands’ unique climate, environmental, social and economic challenges.
The fund provides capital and supports market readiness to selected businesses in sectors from blue carbon and ecotourism to fisheries management and ecosystem restoration. It pools private and publica capital to support the expansion of the projects within and across small islands.
Partnership impact
With funding from the Trafigura Foundation and others, Outrigger aims to support businesses and projects that together reach targets including:
- 12,500 people with improved resilience to climate change in small islands
- 1.9 million people indirectly benefiting from funded activities
- 100,000 hectares of seascape under sustainable management
