Water For People

Building climate-resilient water and hygiene services that keep on delivering

The Trafigura Foundation is backing an initiative that strengthens comprehensive water and sanitation services along with the systems and resources to keep them running far into the future.

The challenge

In many parts of the world, rural communities struggle to access safe and reliable water sources due to poor infrastructure maintenance and service delivery, and inadequate management of water resources.

Women and girls often bear the burden of collecting water for their families, and are disproportionately affected by the consequences of climate change, which is intensifying water scarcity and rainfall unpredictability.

The solution

Water For People works with governments and communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America to ensure reliable and sustainable water and sanitation services.

It builds infrastructure designed to withstand climate shocks, including water and sanitation facilities in public institutions such as schools and health facilities. To ensure water services continue to flow over the long term, it strengthens government and community capacity in planning, financing, and monitoring water and sanitation systems.

It also supports the development and implementation of water resource management plans that account for a changing climate, including watershed protection, groundwater recharge, wetland restoration, and support for diversified livelihoods that align with sustainable water management.

With support from the Trafigura Foundation, Water For People will expand its water, hygiene and sanitation programme in India and Tanzania to provide lasting solutions for many more communities.
