Responding rapidly and effectively to humanitarian crises
The Trafigura Foundation is supporting one of the world’s fastest humanitarian response mechanisms.
The challenge
Climate change is magnifying the threat that extreme weather events such as drought, heatwaves, floods and storms pose for communities in many parts of the world. As a result, there is a growing need for more effective emergency response mechanisms to ward off the worst consequences. But delivering humanitarian support to people in need is hampered by an aid system that is reactive, fragmented and inefficient.
The solution
Start Network is a global network of non-governmental organisations that is enabling humanitarian action that is locally led, fast-moving, innovative and accountable to people in crisis.
The network manages the global Start Fund, one of the fastest-acting emergency response mechanisms in the world. It supports organisations that help affected communities as efficiently and effectively as possible, filling a critical gap in the humanitarian aid system.
The Start Fund is one of the fastest-acting emergency response funding mechanisms in the world, with funds released within 72 hours of the onset of a crisis. While it responds to several types of crises and hazards, nearly two-thirds of the alerts raised by members of the network are climate-related.
Partnership impact
By supporting the Start Fund until 2027, the Trafigura Foundation is reinforcing the Start Network’s ability to anticipate and respond quickly to humanitarian emergencies around the world.
To date, the Start Fund has:
Responded to more than 600 crises
Disbursed more than USD 180 million to implementing organisations
Reached 28 million people in more than 80 countries
