Sumatoria

Providing small businesses with the means to invest in resilience

A grant from the Trafigura Foundation is enabling Sumatoria, a non- profit civil association, to extend affordable loans to underserved enterprises so they can adapt to the changing climate, safeguarding local livelihoods and powering the shift to a more sustainable economy.

The challenge

Climate volatility, ecosystem degradation, and macroeconomic instability are undermining local businesses and the many livelihoods that depend on them across Argentina and Paraguay.

Cooperatives and other small enterprises exposed to droughts, heatwaves, and erratic rainfall need access to affordable medium-term finance to invest in climate adaptation and make their business more sustainable.

Yet the credit that is available to them is often short-term, expensive, and misaligned with production cycles. As a result, needed investments in climate adaptation are delayed, putting incomes and livelihoods at risk.

The solution

Sumatoria operates the Climate Resilience Window, a facility providing affordable, impact-based loans and technical assistance to small businesses, cooperatives and social enterprises implementing climate adaptation and regenerative solutions in Argentina and Paraguay.

Part of Sumatoria’s Delta Fund, the Climate Resilience Window, targets businesses operating in areas including circular economy, clean energy, ecosystem conservation, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable infrastructure that would struggle to secure debt at commercial rates.

Grant support from The Trafigura Foundation is invested alongside private capital in a blended finance model that enables Sumatoria to charge lower interest rates. Borrowers who score highly across four impact dimensions – impact depth, beneficiary inclusion, environmental contribution, and responsible practices – earn the lowest rates.
